  • 10/22/12--11:21: We Are What We Need
  • Independent workers are building a new way together through their networks, their connections, their passions, one gig at a time. They're reinventing the world, together. They are building a world where everyone has the opportunity to choose meaningful independence through interconnection. They're looking around at each other and saying, "We, the community, are what we need, to build the solutions that meet our needs.”

I have to admit, this makes me proud.  And as a member of Freelancers Union, I hope it makes you proud, too.

I’m happy to announce Freelancers Medical– our very own cutting-edge healthcare program with a dedicated medical practice. This fall, in the heart of Brooklyn, the doors will open on the first bricks-and-mortar primary care practice just for freelancers.

The practice will be a place where health care is really about freelancers. Doctors will work to keep freelancers balanced and healthy. Health coaches will teach free yoga and meditation classes to knit together the best of alternative and traditional care. The 6,000-square-foot space is designed specifically for on-the-go freelancers, with free Wi-Fi in the reception area.

We designed the Freelancers Medical program to ensure there are no copays, so freelancers can come to the doctor when they need to, not when their wallets say they can. The practice will only be open to subscribed members of Freelancers Insurance Company. We built Freelancers Insurance Company to help freelancers join together as a group to solve a problem that had bedeviled them individually for decades. And now, this new practice will provide a place where we can gather, learn, and build a better tomorrow – together.

After all, our best support system is ourselves.

Freelancers Medical is the first step for us in a year of new initiatives to expand the mission of Freelancers Union. Next year, we’ll be launching and sponsoring new nonprofit healthcare plans in Oregon, New Jersey, and New York to bring member voices back to the healthcare conversation.

Let me know what you think at the hashtag #FreelancersMedical. Thank you for being part of this new step.

  • 10/22/12--11:21: We Are What We Need
  • The world is changing in front of us. People are seeing they have access to a whole new set of choices and can remake the world around them the way they want it to be. Every day, more and more people wake up and are asking themselves, "How can I make my life work for me today?

As more people ask themselves this question, a growing movement is taking shape. And, it’s independent workers that are leading this movement to "work for me." It’s independent workers that are free to make the changes they want each day. It’s independent workers that are free to innovate solutions that meet their needs. It’s independent workers that are working together to build networks of knowledge and support that enable their independence. It’s independent workers that are free to be freelance.

They're building this new way together through their networks, their connections, their passions, one gig at a time. They're reinventing the world, together. They are building a world where everyone has the opportunity to choose meaningful independence through interconnection. They're looking around at each other and saying, "We, the community, are what we need, to build the solutions that meet our needs.

What has been the result of this new consciousness? New sustainable institutions are arising that "work for me" and "work for we." These institutions are a movement towards "New Mutualism".

From freelance support groups to graphic design coops to mutual insurance companies like FIC, New Mutualist institutions big and small are rising to service the needs of 42 million independent workers. They are seeing beyond the horizon and laying a cornerstone for a new kind of economy just now coming into focus.

My promise is to empower the communities that are building these New Mutualist institutions.

My promise is to power this movement because #WeAreWhatWeNeed.

In the past few weeks, Freelancers Medical brought together the freelance community to connect, breathe, and find a moment of solidarity in the sun.

Yoga events in McCarren Park and Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY, attracted over 200 people, who joined us to experience some outdoor yoga Zen, network with fellow freelancers, and learn more about what the Freelancers Medical program has to offer independent workers.

As if we weren't excited enough already about the upcoming launch of Freelancers Medical, we're even more energized after talking to people face-to-face about New Mutualism and Freelancers Medical – and hearing their enthusiasm for the program and what this means for the freelance community here in NYC.

    Finding Balance at 3rd Ward

It wasn't just the Downward Dogs that brought freelancers together. At 3rd Ward on Monday, Sara sat down with Dr. Neil Patel to talk about the balancing act between health and business. Sara gave tips on business-building and networking, drawing on the advice gathered in her forthcoming book, The Freelancer's Bible. Dr. Patel, a key member of the Freelancers Medical program care team, brought perspective on how to stay healthy and centered as a freelancer.

great talk by @sara_horowitz& dr. neil highlighting new @freelancersu#freelancersmedical, making healthcare work for independent workers

A big thank you to all who were able to join us for each of these events. Freelancers Union is driven by independent workers, their ideas, and their experiences. We are committed to creating a strong community and supporting a healthy lifestyle to ensure their success. So it was certainly special to catch a firsthand glimpse of how efforts to strengthen solidarity continue to fuel the freelance movement. #WeAreWhatWeNeed
